Dry eyes after LASIK surgery

My eyes feel dry with my contact lens, I am thinking of LASIK. Will it make it worse?

Dry eyes may occur and can worsen after LASIK because

  1. Corneal nerves which stimulate tear secretion are cut during the creation of the corneal flap
  2. Goblet cells which produce mucin that is important for tear film stability are devitalized

Dry eyes caused by these procedures can resolve after several months, but it can also be permanent. Those of you who are thinking about refractive surgery should be aware of this.

For those of you who have or are worried of developing dry eyes after the procedure, do consider The Implantable Contact Lens, a reversible vision correction procedure that has the superiority of not causing dry eyes.
