Frequently Asked Questions

Who is suitable for Visian ICL™?
1. Anyone who needs glasses to see better, including post-LASIK patients

2. Anyone who has sufficient anterior chamber depth within the eye. This is measured by a rapid, non-contact and painless scan at our clinic and the results will be derived immediately.

What is the downtime?
The surgery takes about 10 minutes and we expect you to see well enough to watch TV and read on your iPad on the same day.

What are the risks of Visian ICL™?
Though very rare, one of the risks of Visian ICL™ is infection (0.01%). The other risks related with Visian ICL™ are largely preventable if an ultrasound is used. The EyeClinic has 2 ultrasound machines to ensure that your Visian ICL™ size is customised for your eyes. The risk of cataracts which can happen if the Visian ICL™ is too small or glaucoma if the Visian ICL™ is too big are largely eliminated.

Detailed measurement of the anterior segment of the eye is taken

So we arrive at this desired result.

What is involved in the Visian ICL™ procedure?
The procedure takes about 5 minutes in each eye. The surgery can be performed under local anaesthesia (with the use of eye drops) or general anaesthesia which is pleasant if you prefer not to be aware of the surgery. There is therefore very little discomfort and normally no pain associated with the procedure.

What if my vision changes?
If there are major changes in your vision, the Visian ICLTM can be easily removed and replaced. The Visian ICLTM does not replace reading glasses when presbyopia sets in. However, when presbyopia sets in, we can exchange the Visian ICLTM for a lens that allows you to see both far and near. The reversibility of the Visian ICLTM is its unique selling point. That is unlike LASIK, where your future options for the eye become limited once the cornea is thinned.

Does the Visian ICLTM dry out or get dirty like a contact lens?
No. The Visian ICL™ is designed to remain in place within the eye without maintenance. You can dive, fly and sleep without worries with the ICL™. Normal contact lenses that lie ON the eye cause dry eyes and irritation after prolonged wearing hours. This will not happen with Visian ICL as it is WITHIN the eye.

Can the Visian ICLTM be seen by the naked eye?
No. Because the Visian ICL™ is placed behind the iris, neither you, nor an observer will be able to see the lens. It has no colour.

Can I feel the Visian ICL?
No.

How long can the Visian ICLTM stay in the eye?
The Visian ICL™ is intended to remain in place indefinitely
