What is the effect of Blue Light ?

I have been asked twice this week by school kids , one from a french school and the other from my son about the effect of blue light on the eyes. So clearly this must be a discussion in school.

Are there any advantages of blue light or is it all bad?

Blue light does two main things.

1) It stimulates receptors on the retina to release melanopsin which 'tells’ the pineal gland to decrease melatonin production. Melatonin is important in helping us fall asleep which means it is secreted at a high level at night and low in the day. So blue light disturbs the sleep cycle, and keeps us awake

2) It can causes a degeneration of the macula which is a part of the retina important for sharp vision
